Hard Drive

Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) is designed to bridge the middle ground between traditional mechanical hard drives and solid state drives by combining the two. Although high capacity SSDs are quite expensive, low capacity units are much less expensive and achieve similar levels of performance. Intel's SRT lets you use a low capacity SSD to boost the performance of a mechanical drive by using the SSD as a cache

Why choose Solid State Drives?
We start our virtually-silent workstations with Solid State Drives because they have no moving platters like their hard disk brethren. Without moving parts, SSDs do not vibrate and do not require extra cooling. The price per gigabyte gap between HDDs and SSDs is shrinking as Solid State Drive capacities increase and prices drop.

Why are the Hard Disk Drive options so limited?
The hard disk drive is one of the only moving parts inside of a workstation that is not related to cooling. The physical platters spin and generate vibrations which cause acoustics inside the PC. Many drives spin at 7200RPM but higher performance drives like Western Digital’s VelociRaptor and high-performance SAS drives may spin at 10,000 or even 15,000RPM. We have chosen to limit our drives to a maximum of 7200RPM to minimize acoustic noise.
